A Colonial Advocate

The Launching of his Newspaper and the Queenston Career of William Lyon MacKenzie
On May 18, 1824 a ‘grocer, druggist and haberdasher,’ William Lyon MacKenzie, launched the Colonial Advocate in Queenston, Ontario. Little more than a decade later he would lead the ill-fated 1837 rebellion. In Queenston he produced twenty issues of his newspaper before moving on to York (later renamed Toronto) and to the colourful career which earned him his place in Canadian history.
