Specimen of Printing Types and Ornaments in use at the Printing Office of Lovell & Gibson
St. Nicholas Street, Montreal
Nineteenth-century Canadian type specimen books are rare, as few printers of the time had a sufficient variety of typefaces to justify printing more than a single broadside. The original edition of this specimen was printed in red and black, with some gold, likely making a striking impression on early printers in both Upper and Lower Canada. This reprint, however, is in black and white. The 1847 copy used for reproduction was provided by Toronto antiquarian bookseller Hugh Anson-Cartwright.
