The Gutenberg Galaxy

The Making of Typographic Man
First published in 1962, The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man is Marshall McLuhan’s influential analysis of mass media’s impact – particularly that of the printing press – on European culture and human consciousness. McLuhan examines the emergence of what he calls the Gutenberg Man, shaped by the profound shift in awareness brought about by the printed book. The book also popularized the term global village, now a cornerstone of media theory. Designed by Harold Kurschenska at the University of Toronto Press, its layout was considered groundbreaking at the time.
