The Use of Grayscale for Improved Character Presentation

A thesis submitted for the degree of doctor of philosophy in the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto, March 1991. To measure character quality objectively, font designers need automated tools for character generation and image-quality evaluation. This problem is addressed by modelling the entire viewing environment, from generation of grayscale characters through the visual system’s response to their display on various output devices.
